Of course, when we plan our trips, we always hope that things will always go according to plan. But sometimes, life has a sense of humor and unfortunately, things happen that make it necessary to change our plans.
A few months ago, we were eagerly anticipating our second Disney Cruise– this time to Mexico. We had paid it off, completed the on-line check-in, and all of our activities and excursions were selected. We were counting down the days. The prospect of leaving the cold winter behind for a few days for some warm Caribbean sun was exhilarating.
However, sometimes things happen in life that make it necessary to change your plans. In this case, we opted to cancel our cruise because the itinerary was scheduled to sail into a Zika zone. Normally, this wouldn’t be a big deal to us. We went to the Bahamas and Puerto Rico just last year. But this time, it’s different, for a very big reason:
That’s right! Baby #3 will be joining the Becoming a Traveling Family clan. Obviously, this means that there will be some changes and adjustments to our family. I’m not one to heavily document my pregnancies but here are some basic questions you may have so here are my answers.
When are you due?
I am due the first week of August. With my other two pregnancies, I have gone five days late so we’re predicting this little one will make its appearance around the second week of August.
How have you been feeling?
Honestly, I’ve been feeling pretty awful. My previous pregnancies were rough and it seems like this one is going down the same road. We’ve taken a break from traveling even short distances for December and January to give me time to rest and hopefully start feeling better. I’m starting to get pretty antsy to get back on the road, however, even though I don’t feel well. I’m hoping that the all-day nausea will subside somewhat in the next couple of weeks in time for our trip to San Diego in February.
Emotionally, I’ve been a little overwhelmed. I was just starting to get the hang of balancing the needs of two kids so the idea of adding a third is actually pretty daunting to me.
As far as travel goes, I am worried. I don’t know how long this all-day sickness will last. Will it last up until the last few weeks, like it did with Ladybug? Or will it subside after 15 weeks, similar to my pregnancy with Buddy? I don’t know. So I’m constantly warring with myself- half of me wants to keep planning trips and the other half wants to just take a travel break for this year. So far the travel lover in me is winning, so let’s hope that continues to be the case.
Was this planned?
No. This was not planned. We had talked casually about having a third child maybe a year or two from now but the older our kids got, the more we felt content about just having two. But sometimes life has other plans and throws you for a loop.
What does this mean for your family?
We still plan on traveling as much as we can this year. We have a trip to San Diego planned for February. Ireland is also hopefully in the plan for late spring. And we have a few other weekend trips in the brainstorming stage. I plan on taking a break from our travels when the baby is born to give me time to recover but once I’m feeling up to it, I’ll be ready to get back on the road.
In light of this new addition, as well another big factor which I will be announcing on the blog in the next few days, we’ve decided that homeschooling isn’t for us after all. As excited as I was at the prospect of homeschooling, I feel at peace with our decision and a lot less burdened about the responsibilities heaped on my shoulders. Ladybug starts school in the fall which will also change our travel habits. I know it will take a little time to figure out how to make our traveling lifestyle work for the future. But rest assured, we still plan on traveling as much as we can both far away and close to home.
What does this mean for the blog?
Becoming a Traveling Family is first and foremost a travel blog. And it will remain a travel blog. I don’t document my pregnancies much because, honestly, I hate being pregnant. It’s not a time in my life I care to remember all that much. I don’t plan on posting much about pregnancy unless it relates to travel. I WILL continue to post about attractions reviews, destination guides and tips for traveling with kids. You can expect to see a lot more posts about Chicago, as well.
