One of my favorite parts of traveling is discovering new foods and dishes that I wouldn’t normally eat at home. In 2017, I had many opportunities to try new things and the foods I ate did not disappoint. It was hard to pick my favorites but here they are separated into two categories: appetizers/entrées and desserts/beverages.
Best Appetizers and Entrées
1. Monte Cristo Sandwich- Cafe Orleans- Disneyland Resort
I was craving this sandwich long after we left Disneyland in August. The Monte Cristo is the perfect blend of salty and sweet with deli meat, cheese and a dusting of powdered sugar on top. The berry dipping sauce added a delicious touch.
2. Oven Baked Salmon Royale- Triton’s- Disney Wonder
The food on our Disney cruise back in February was one of the highlights of the whole trip. Especially the salmon at Triton’s that I had on our final night. It was probably the best salmon I’ve had in my life and a great way to end an already amazing trip.
3. Lemon-Thyme Marinated Chicken with Sour Cream Mashed Potatoes and Roasted Vegetables- Animator’s Palate- Disney Wonder
Our first night of the cruise really set the bar high as far as food goes. The chicken was flavorful and tender, the mashed potatoes light and fluffy, and the vegetables in sauce added a little zing to the whole thing. Not only did this dish taste amazing, the presentation was top notch, as well.
4. Iced Lobster and Jumbo Shrimp- Triton’s- Disney Wonder
I love seafood and will usually choose fish or shrimp over chicken or beef if it is an option. However, one type of seafood I’ve never cared for is lobster. That wasn’t the case for this appetizer. I don’t know what they did to make the lobster taste good to me but I could’ve had another helping of this one.
5. Jaco Taco- Fish Market- Alexandria, Virginia
I mentioned in my post about Alexandria, Virginia that I am searching for the place with the best fish tacos. The Jaco Taco at Fish Market in Alexandria is right up there at the top of my list of favorites.
Best Desserts and Beverages
1. Beignets- Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen- Disneyland Resort
I have never been to New Orleans so I can’t say how the beignets at Ralph Brennan’s compare, but these are the best I’ve ever had. They are so light and fluffy and perfect for either breakfast or dessert. The whole family loved them so much that we went back a second time right before our flight home.
2. Honey Bee Frozen Lemonade- Hungry Bear Restaurant- Disneyland Resort
Specialty lemonades are my weakness. As someone who chooses not to drink alcohol, my special indulgence is an ice cold glass of lemonade. And if it’s frozen? Even better. This frozen lemonade with a stick of honey is the perfect way to cool down on a hot summer day in southern California.
3. Blood Orange and Mango Lemonade- Nando’s
The blood orange and mango lemonade from Nando’s was such a hit with my family that I didn’t even get a chance to snap a picture before it was gone. It was that good.
4. Caramel Macadamia Nut Cheesecake Tart- Tiana’s Place- Disney Wonder
I’m not usually a cheesecake person. It’s too rich and I can usually only stand a bite or two before I’ve had enough. But this caramel macadamia nut cheesecake tart from Tiana’s Place on the Wonder was an exception I gladly made. And the presentation was very aesthetically pleasing, as well.
5. Strawberry Shortcake Sundae- Triton’s- Disney Wonder
What I loved about the desserts on the Wonder was that they weren’t huge. It was easy to save room for this strawberry shortcake sundae after an already delicious meal at Triton’s. It was the perfect ending to an already amazing dinner.
As you can see, I was clearly in Disney mode this year. 8 out of 10 items on this list came from either our Disney Cruise or Disneyland. But no matter where the food came from, it was a good year with even better food.
