2017 has been a busy year for our family. Our main goal for this year has been to get out and explore more locally. We’re not sure how much longer we’ll be living in the Chicago area so we want to do as much as we can in the city, as well as out in the suburbs before we move.
Our second goal for 2017 was to seize every travel opportunity we could. Our travels this year took us on our very first cruise, to the Caribbean, up to Canada, and more. Here is an overview of our adventures in 2017.
2017 Travels in Review
In January, Becoming a Traveling Family accepted its very first award!
At the end of the month, we took a quick overnight trip up to Milwaukee for the kids’ first basketball game. The next day, despite the cold we ventured out to the Mitchell Park Domes and had lunch at Café Benelux.
We took our first family camping trip at Illinois Beach State Park. We had such a good time that we plan on making a yearly camping trip our new tradition.
July brought a day trip to Starved Rock State Park in Utica, Illinois. We’ve wanted to go to this state park for ages and this year, we finally made it happen.
Also in July, I posted my survival tips for parents wanting to take their young kids camping.
August was a busy travel month for us. We flew to Washington State on August 1st for our family reunion at Fort Worden State Park. For four days, we hiked, explored old military bunkers, saw an operating lighthouse, played at the beach and spent quality time with my parents, siblings and their kids.
Before flying home, we drove up to Vancouver, British Columbia for a quick weekend trip. Although I had been to British Columbia several times as a kid, it was our first time with the kids. We spent most of the time at Stanley Park, one of the top tourist destinations in Vancouver.
We were only home for two weeks before taking off to Disneyland where we spent three magical days riding the rides, meeting characters, enjoying the entertainment and indulging in all sorts of good food. It was so hard to leave and we can’t wait to make a return trip.
September marked the start of the fall festivities. We have so many traditions we love to do during the autumn months. In September, we took a day trip to Hobart, Indiana to go apple picking at County Line Orchard. With so many orchards in the area, I’m excited to continue this tradition next year at a different one.
October brought a trip to the Cadillac Palace Theatre in Chicago and our first time seeing Les Misérables on stage. It was an amazing performance and had me daydreaming about it and listening to the soundtrack for days afterwards.
Two days later, we were all packed once again and heading to Alexandria, Virginia for D’s work conference. The kids and I explored Old Town Alexandria with family and spent a day in Washington, DC (post to come eventually). We will hopefully be able to see more of it next year, as well.
December is all about Christmas in our house and we were excited to attend a different Christmas market this year. We went to the Naperville Christkindlmarket at the Naper Settlement. It was so fun to see all the stalls selling Christmas wares from around the world.
We also crossed off a Chicago bucket list item by visiting the Skydeck at the Willis Tower. This is a must-do Chicago activity and I recommend it to anyone visiting the Windy City any time of the year.
Looking Ahead: 2018 Travels
Our 2018 travels are still mostly up in the air. We do have a trip to San Diego scheduled for February. We’re looking forward to leaving the Chicago cold behind and spending a few days in the sunny California weather.
Other than that, we’ll take whatever travel opportunities come our way. We’re hoping to make a trip to Ireland happen this spring. Of course, we will also be doing a lot of local travel as well as we’re still trying to see as much of our home city as we can.
2017 has been a great year for our family and for the blog. I look forward to another great year of travel ahead of us.
