My family loves breakfast. We can eat breakfast for any meal of the day. Over three years ago, we stumbled upon an excellent restaurant that has become our favorite breakfast joint. I was pregnant with Ladybug and D and I had just left the hospital where I was undergoing a routine test to make sure that she was healthy. It was fairly early so we decided to go out for breakfast before D left for school. We asked one of the nurses if she knew of anywhere that we should try. She gave us a hearty recommendation to try Walker Bros. So that’s where we went. I can see why it came so highly recommended. Walker Bros is, for lack of a better word, amazing. In my eyes, no other breakfast joint compares.
Although Walker Bros is part of the larger The Original Pancake House company, Walker Bros itself only has six locations scattered throughout Chicago’s northern suburbs, with a seventh opening soon. The first location opened in 1960 in Wilmette. Walker Bros has been praised by the likes of USA Today, Zagat and Chicago Magazine, so you know it has to be good.
My family and I go every few months to get our breakfast fix. Although their pancakes are delicious, I actually prefer their crepes. They are both light and filling. There is a variety of different kinds depending on what you are in the mood for, from sweet to savory. My favorite is the French Crepe which is served with strawberries and an orange sauce with strawberries and powdered sugar sprinkled on top. But the chocolate crepe is also very tasty. It contains the perfect amount of chocolate inside, so it doesn’t overpower the rest of the crepe but still tastes very good.
Another amazing item on the menu is the Apple Cinnamon Pancake, though it is more like a dessert than a breakfast item in my opinion. And I would never eat one by myself because it is huge! If you ever find yourself sitting in a Walker Bros eyeing this item, make sure you have a friend help you finish it.
Although the food is amazing and is really what makes the restaurant great, I can’t forget to mention something about the atmosphere. The outside of Walker Bros leaves much to be desired, but don’t let that turn you away. There is such a homey, old-fashioned feel when you walk inside. The decorations are classic and the staff, from the hostess to the bus boys, really makes you feel welcome. I’m sure it depends on who is working but whenever we have gone, the staff has been so nice and accepting even to Ladybug and Buddy. Whenever the kids menu is also a coloring page with crayons included, I know that it’s a place I can feel comfortable bringing my children.
I highly recommend giving Walker Bros a try if you are ever in Chicago. The food is amazing, the service is great, and it’s just a fun place to be. This breakfast joint is the perfect place for family breakfasts, brunch with friends, or even a date night with your sweetheart. Go ahead, give it a try. You won’t be disappointed.
